The Nasirean Ethics is the best known ethical digest to be composed
in medieval Persia, if not in all mediaeval Islam. It appeared
initially in 633/1235 when Tūsī was already a celebrated scholar,
scientist, politico-religious propagandist. The work has a special
significance as being composed by an outstanding figure at a
crucial time in the history he was himself helping to shape: some
twenty years later Tūsī was to cross the greatest psychological
watershed in Islamic civilization, playing a leading part in the
capture of Baghdad and the extinction of the generally acknowledged
Caliphate there. In this work the author is primarily concerned
with the criteria of human behaviour: first in terms of space and
priority allotted, at the individual level, secondly, at the
economic level and thirdly at the political level.

This book is published by Springer as open access under the Open
Access CC BY 4.0 Licence and under the auspices of
the International Fluid Academy (IFA,
www.fluidacademy.org). It addresses and covers key aspects
and fundamental elements of rationalized intravenous fluid therapy
for critically ill patients. Intravenous fluids are one of the most
commonly prescribed treatments in inpatient settings and are
frequently administered without appropriate evidence-based
guidelines. Despite their medicinal nature, they are often not
fully recognized as drugs or medications, with accompanying
considerations such as dosing, duration, indications,
contraindications, potential side effects, and de-escalation. The
book seeks to fill this knowledge gap. Each chapter in this book
starts with a clinical vignette and a question that relates to the
content of the chapter. This is followed by a brief summary
abstract, key learning points, the main text, and a conclusion that
answers the clinical question and summarizes the relevant take-home
messages. Additionally, each chapter includes an IFA commentary
that references the latest literature and evidence. The book
commences with an introductory chapter that provides definitions
and terminology, and is then divided into four sections. The first
section covers the basics of intravenous fluid therapy, including
traditional models of fluid compartments and their limitations in
sick patients, fluid bolus dynamics, heart-lung interactions and
their effects on fluid challenge and fluid responsiveness,
traditional and Stewart concepts of arterial blood gas analysis,
and electrolyte physiology related to clinical issues. The second
section discusses commercially available intravenous fluids, while
the third section focuses on fluid therapy in specific clinical
situations. The final section introduces the concepts of fluid
stewardship and appropriate fluid prescription. In accordance with
the mission statement of the International Fluid Academy, which
aims to foster education and to promote research on fluid
management and monitoring in critically ill and other patients,
with the ultimate goal of improving patient survival rates, this
volume makes a valuable contribution to establishing fluid
stewardship at the bedside. The contents of the book will be useful
for physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and other healthcare
professionals from various clinical disciplines working at the
bedside in the emergency room, operating room, or intensive care
unit who require support for their everyday clinical practice.

Bioimpedance has become a useful tool to measure changes in body
fluid compartment volumes. An Electrical Impedance Spectroscopic
(EIS) system is described that extends the capabilities of
conventional fixed frequency impedance plethysmographic (IPG)
methods to allow examination of the redistribution of fluids
between the intracellular and extracellular compartments of body
segments. The combination of EIS and IPG techniques was evaluated
in the human calf, thigh, and torso segments of eight healthy men
during 90 minutes of six degree head-down tilt (HDT). After 90
minutes HDT the calf and thigh segments significantly (P
In considering the motion of the rocket, at each instant of time

rocket, the following procedure is used. An arbitrary but fixed
instant of time is considered. A fictitious solid body is denoted
by S with mass m, which would be obtained if the rocket at the
instant t solidified and ceased giving off particles. The solid
body S will not be homogeneous; in some of its parts, it will have
the density of a metal and in other parts the density of a gas, and
so forth. It shall be assumed that the fictitious solid body S is
invariably fixed to the body of the rocket and from the instant t
onwards (instant of solidification) moves together with the rocket.
The momentum of the body S shall be denoted by Q.

The goal of planetary protection is to control, to the degree
possible, the biological cross-contamination of planetary bodies.
Guidelines developed by the Committee on Space Research (COSPAR)
are used by all spacefaring nations to guide their preparations for
encounters with solar system bodies. NASA's Science Mission
Directorate has convened the Planetary Protection Independent
Review Board (PPIRB) to consider updating the COSPAR guidelines
given the growing interest from commercial and private groups in
exploration and utilization of Mars and other bodies in space. At
the request of NASA, this publication reviews the findings of the
PPIRB and comments on their consistency with the recommendations of
the recent National Academies report Review and Assessment of the
Planetary Protection Policy Development Processes. Table of
